One foot in front of the other
The times are asking us to take action. Massive political and personal change are needed. That sounds overwhelming and intimidating.
When we were on our MCC orientation we walked past a giant sign every day that said "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." Lao Tzu. In those days we were stepping towards our MCC term of three years in Egypt.
Now we need to take steps again, no matter the size.
Small steps.
I resonate with small steps. I often repeat Kenton Lobe's mantra to myself: "Directional movement." We're almost never "there" but we move in a direction. Moving with small steps is do-able. Sometimes I get impatient and think "We don't have time for small steps! We need this fixed yesterday." But I've worked with groups of people long enough to know that if you rush change, sometimes you push it backward. In the same breath COVID has taught us that we can all change our behaviours relatively quickly so maybe there is some hope for this impatient person that we could move a little faster toward healing our ailing planet.
ReplyDeleteI love that term, Connie. I am actually in the middle of writing a post about directional movement, a term which has helped me so much. I didn't realize I should attribute it to Kenton!
DeleteI'm grateful for permission to take small steps and go as slowly as I need to. And hopeful for momentum to build so I can take bigger steps in time!
