It's time for Faithful Climate Conversations!

If you don't know me personally, you might not know that one of my passions is group conversation.  Yes, I love getting people together to discuss important things.  Building community energy and strength around shared interests and concerns gives me great joy!   That might sound a bit dorky, but hear me out. :)

In the last few weeks I've had the honour of joining with two different groups of people for a structured conversation around climate change, how it affects our lives and how to take that knowledge into action.  These conversations are a gift from For the Love of Creation, a faith-based initiative for climate justice that is working to help people take meaningful action in the climate emergency.

There are three conversation structures, designed to gather small groups of people (6-10) and help them to move forward from where they are at in terms of climate action.  These are the three conversations, from their website: 

"Creation, Climate and You – Designed for people who have rarely, if ever, talked about climate change in a group setting before, this guide focuses on gently surfacing peoples’ emotions and underlying thoughts about climate change.

From Concern to Action – For people who may have a basic understanding of climate change or are concerned about the effects of climate change, but remain uncertain about the best ways to act in light of this reality.

Build a Better Future – Meant for people who have already been involved in climate action at some level, this guide focuses on enacting political and systemic change to address the climate emergency."

And in case you're wondering, this is not a business initiative for me.  This is strictly for the love of creation. It costs nothing to me to lead or to you to participate.  It's one of my small steps - following my passion in regards to climate change and hopefully helping others find and follow theirs!

Advocacy? Time to learn!

100 years ago when I was in university there was a letter-writing party for Amnesty International .  I heard about it happening on campus and thought about going, but in the end I didn't attend.  I didn't write those letters regarding political prisoners and refugees stuck in dangerous places and human rights abuses.  I was busy growing up and thinking about me.  And probably exams, boys and other things.  I'm not going to be too hard on myself here, but as I think back, I wish I had written.  I wish I'd begun to learn about advocacy back when I was 19, rather than starting to think about it now, in my 40's.   But here I am! Do we have a shared goal?

Usually when people join forces there's a specific goal that they all share.  I've been thinking about this in terms of how I approach Climate Change and the Climate Emergency. What actually is  our goal?  Is it to: Save the Earth?  Mitigate the worst effects of Climate change? Reduce our personal footprint? Prepare to meet the humanitarian crises brought on by climate change? Lobby governments and big business? Support protesters in specific locations?  There is such a huge range of work to be done.  Like any huge project, we need people working on many different levels and at many different tasks. This brings me back to the idea of honouring and empowering every individual to use their passions, gifts and skills. Each of us can and must apply ourselves in the way that we are moved to do so.  I need to find a way to lift my own wings to the wind - a way to use my gifts and passions to uplift the cause.
